Supporting Community Members in Custody:
Gallawah’s Unique Disability Justice Program

At Gallawah, we have a dedicated team of specialist support coordinators passionate about helping community members in custody navigate the complexities of the justice system and prepare for their return to family and community life. With our unique approach, we provide participants with guidance, understanding, and unwavering support to create meaningful change. Whether it’s attending court, supporting families, connecting participants to culture, or collaborating with justice officers, we are committed to truth-telling and never giving up. Our team works closely with participants and their families to develop tailored support plans, ensuring a smooth transition and the right resources to help them stay on track and thrive.

Disability Support in the Justice System:
What We Fund, What NDIS fund and What the Justice System Fund

If you have a disability and are involved in the justice system, there are specific supports we may fund, while other responsibilities fall to the justice system. You may be considered involved in the justice system if you are:

  • In custody within a correctional facility (prison, remand centre, youth detention centre, or secure mental health facility)
  • On remand, awaiting or following sentencing
  • Required by a court order to report to a correctional or community correctional agency (e.g., on bail, probation, or parole)
  • Serving a community-based order, or on leave of absence or therapeutic leave
  • Under forensic orders with restrictions on movements, drug testing, or prescribed treatments

For a complete guide, see our NDIS Justice System Guidelines.
